#0183;#32;Dore Westbury Milling Machine Hi, I bought many years ago, some of the castings and parts to make a Mk2 version of the Dore Westbury mill, but had to put a hold on its machining and assembly for some time as I was still a serving member of HM Forces.

over two years ago i bought what i thought was a dore westbury mk1 milling machine from the 1960`s. it has been in storage since but when i brought it over to my new workshop and examined it more closely, i noticed that it had several unusual features that made it difficult to place it in the correct category.
#0183;#32;I built a DoreWestbury in about 1976 from the kit pre machined parts. I still have it although it is now dismantled. The head has bean mounted on a Tom Senior M1 milling machine and the base has been used to make a small surface grinder. I have modified the head to use polyvee belts with an inverter controlled motor.
My machine is the Mark 1 shown in the third and subsequent pictures. Stepped pulleys give three spindle speeds: 300, 800 and 1650 rpm. If the to 1 epicyclic gearbox sitting under the spindle pulleys is brought into action to gear things down, those speeds are reduced to 35, 90 and 188 rpm respectively.

Probably best that you try out (say) a Sieg X2 style machine then a Dore Westbury before you buy, somehow. The DW is certainly versatile but that has its downsides.
