What is alluvial gold? Alluvial gold is gold that has been freed from its host rock and ended up where it is after having been moved by water. Examples would include modern river and creek gravels, fossil tertiary river beds and terraces, as well as modern and ancient beach deposits. If youve ever panned for gold, youve almost certainly panned alluvial gold.

In 1890 alluvial gold was discovered in Diggings Creek (or Diggills Creek also known as Old Starcke gold diggings, Starcke goldfield being approximately 72km northnorthwest of Cooktown), a branch of the Starcke River, 40km northwest of Cape Flattery. Rocky River Gold and Mineral Field Alluvial gold was discovered in the Rocky River, 32km northeast of Coen, in 1893 by Lakeland. Reef mining began on Neville Creek (location unknown) in 1896 and the field was proclaimed in 1897. Between 1896 and 1901, 951 tonnes of ore yielded of gold.
